Lizzo Signs First-Look Deal With Amazon Prime

Lizzo has signed a deal with Amazon to develop projects for the Prime Video platform. On Thursday, she appeared via Zoom at Amazon's Television Critics Association virtual session to announce the agreement, which will see the Grammy winner develop television projects for the streaming platform.

“I’m so excited to partner with the amazing team at Amazon,” Lizzo said. “Thank you to Jen Salke and the rest of the team for making this dream come true. I can’t wait to get started and share my vision with the world."

Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke noted that the singer was “one of the most exciting, creative, joyful artists in the industry,” adding that she has a unique perspective that will undoubtedly draw Prime Video customers.

The three-time Grammy winner, whose singles include "Good as Hell," "Truth Hurts" and "Juice" off of her debut album Cuz I Love You, appeared in a supporting role in the film Hustlers, alongside Jennifer Lopez.

Other artists have signed similar deals with Amazon, including Viola Davis, Marvelous Mrs. Maisel creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino and star Rachel Brosnahan, Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Sharon Horgan, Daniel Dae Kim and Brad Pitt, among others.

Named by Time "Entertainer of the Year" in 2019, Lizzo started rapping as a teenager in Houston, Texas, where her family had moved when she was 10. She formed a group called Cornrow Clique with her friends when she was 14. After studying classical music at the University of Houston, she lived out of her car for a year while trying to break into the music industry.

In 2012, she formed a rap/R&B group called the Chalice, who released their debut album locally in Minneapolis. A year later, Lizzo's hip-hop debut album, Lizzobangers, produced by Lazerbeak, was released. In 2019, Cuz I Love You debuted after which she performed at the Coachella Music Festival. "Truth Hurts" became her first number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100. She said her debut album was inspired by The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.
