10 Rules WWE Divas Have To Follow (And 10 Only For Male Wrestlers)

Quick Links

Working for the biggest wrestling promotion in the world obviously comes with a number of fallbacks, which include a number of rules that both the men and the women must adhere to. Of course, there are a number of different rules for both the men and the women, as well as rules that cover every employee in the company. Many of these rules have remained under wraps over the past few years, but the rise of social media and the fact that many stars do more interviews on podcasts and TV in the current era, it's much harder to keep secrets right now.

Every job comes with rules, the things that employees have to do to ensure that the company runs smoothly and the things that they should avoid if they don't want to be blacklisted. WWE is no different, except for the fact that most of their employees are internationally recognized athletes and if they are in trouble because they broke rules, then the whole world will usually find out about it.

The following list looks at just 10 rules that the women of WWE have to follow, and 10 that are there for the male superstars on their main roster. While this is still a dream job for many independent wrestlers training to be part of the business all over the world, it definitely comes at a price.

Men: Superstars Are Not Allowed To Cut Promos Without Permission

Many of the WWE Universe are already aware that everything that happens on both SmackDown or Raw is scripted, this means that all of the promos that superstars deliver have to be approved by either Vince McMahon himself or Michael Hayes before they are allowed to pick up a mic on international TV. According to Wrestling Inc, this was revealed by a leaked document from a live event a few years ago.

Of course, there are a number of stars who don't have to play by these rules, like The Rock and John Cena, who are much bigger than the company at this point, but other than these two former World Champions, the rest of the WWE roster has to have pre-approval from someone in a higher role in the company.

This is one of the rules that probably makes sense since WWE's creative team will want to ensure that the promo is heading in the right direction for the storyline, but it's harsh that there are rules for some stars and not others.

Women: Women Are Not Allowed To Have Personal Relationships With Officials

This rule became official a few years ago and the biggest reason WWE made this a rule is because the company doesn't want any other superstars having a bigger advantage in the company than anyone else.

The creative team is not even supposed to be friends with the talent because it will make them biased when it comes to creating storylines for certain stars in the company.

One of the secrets that an article by Screen Rant revealed was that the women in the company are not allowed to date anyone who isn't a performer. Shows like Total Divas have promoted the fact that the women in WWE can have relationships with other stars, but at the same time they are not allowed to step outside of those boundaries. The last known relationship between an official and a Divas was when Michael Hayes and Rose Mendes were rumored to be in a relationship.

Men: Unapproved Words Should Not Be Used

It's already been reported that the stars of WWE are not allowed to cut promos without prior approval from a producer backstage, but they can also get into trouble if the content of the promo isn't the way that it was pitched.

Many promos in WWE right now are scripted so that the creative team has some idea of what direction this should be going in. Despite this, there are a number of stars who decide to ad-lib their promos instead and it can cause a few issues backstage.

According to Rolling Stone, it was only a few years ago that Brad Maddox delivered a promo to the audience and used a number of words that the company had banned. Despite his position in the company at that time, he was released almost instantly. Needless to say, the rest of the roster has remained in line with this one ever since.

Women: No Unacceptable Photos Should Be Shared Online

There was once a time when WWE pushed their women to pose for magazine outlets like Hugh Hefner's famous magazine because it gave WWE the much-needed exposure that they required at that point in time. With the Women's Revolution now in full swing and the company concentrating more on the ability of the women in the ring rather than their looks, a new rule has come in.

The women of WWE are no longer allowed to share images online that are anything but PG. This is for current and potential female wrestlers since it was reported that a number of women have been rejected because of the images that were shared of them online.

It is also reported that one of the main reasons that Chyna isn't in the WWE Hall of Fame is because of the images and videos of the former Women's Champion that can be found online.

Men: No Attending Other Wrestling Shows Without Permission

This is probably in many WWE stars contracts because the minute WWE sign someone they retain all of their image rights. If these stars turn up at another event then it will add hype to someone else's show, which is definitely something WWE wouldn't approve of. Paige attended WWC back in 2016 and proposed to Alberto Del Rio inside the ring, which was something that the WWE Universe speculated she would be released for. Luckily, she wasn't.

According to GameSpot, Robbie McAlister wasn't that lucky. He wasn't as big a star as Paige so when he was seen in the crowd at a TNA show the company called him and told him to leave immediately before fining him his entire WrestleMania cheque and then releasing him from the company. Always ask the company for permission first; it's not a decision that is worth losing your job over.

Women: WWE Seems To Have An Input On Who Divas Can Date

When WWE stars sign their first contract with the company, they become the property of WWE and they are then allowed to have an input on who they can date.

There have been a number of instances where WWE have tried to dictate to their talent who they are allowed to be in a relationship with, even though it's unethical.

According to Inquistr, there was a reported incident with Vince McMahon where he put Lana in a storyline with Dolph Ziggler because he hoped that it would break Lana and Rusev up, as he thought that she was too good for him. According to WWE INSIDERS, there was also an incident where Paige began a relationship with Alberto Del Rio and the duo was told to split by WWE officials. WWE should have no say over the private lives of their employees, but this has become an unwritten rule that the company has allowed themselves to live by.

Men: WWE Stars Can't Leave A Show Part Way Through Without Permission

The wrestling business is all about respect and when superstars are part of live events, one way that they show respect is to stay all the way through the show and watch other superstar's matches because they have watched theirs. It's something that happens in a number of companies and only recently came to light because Dolph Ziggler signed a new contract.

It was reported by WhatCulture that one of the terms of his new contract is that he doesn't have to remain at shows until the end anymore. He is allowed to leave whenever he wants. This is something that is open to WWE's bigger stars like Brock Lesnar but mid-card talent and lower are expected to stay at the show all the way through, since it's showing respect for those around them and hopefully this, in turn, will give them more opportunities in the company.

Women: Women Are Usually The Ones Who Have Matches Cancelled

The women of WWE haven't had a lot of luck in the past when it comes to WWE events since the company has always thought that the women's match was the easiest one for them to cancel. A prime example of this was back at WrestleMania 29 when the only women's match on the card included The Bella Twins and The Funkadactyls but because The Undertaker's match with CM Punk ran over the time that they were given, the women's match was cancelled.

This is one of the only WrestleMania's to not have a female presence and if the company is able to cancel a match of that caliber on the Grandest Stage Of Them All at the last minute, then there is nothing from stopping them cutting and changing these matches on SmackDown and Raw. Hopefully, the Women's Revolution has put the women in the driving seat of WWE so that this doesn't happen again.

Men: No High-Fiving Fans On The Way To The Ring On Televised Shows

This is one of the newest rules that has been added to WWE programming since it was only revealed this week, according to Sportskeeda.

Ronda Rousey is one of the only stars in the company who is now allowed to high-five fans on the way to the ring because the company feels that it takes up too much time when they are trying to put together a show.

Raw and SmackDown are presented on Network TV which means that they have to work to time restraints and one of the things they have decided to pull back on is the time that it takes their stars to get to the ring. Rousey would also stand out if she's the only star who does it, which is exactly what WWE needs to do to get her over with the fans much quicker. It is unknown when this rule came into action, but it is now reported that high-fiving fans on televised events is not allowed.

Women: Stephanie McMahon Has Final Say On The Women's Division

For the past few decades, Stephanie McMahon has been the most powerful woman in WWE, and the woman behind the success of the Women's Division. Stephanie has had a huge part in the Women's Revolution, but if she's crossed, there are consequences.

Two of the most famous run-ins that Stephanie had were with AJ Lee and Kaitlyn.

Her altercation with Kaitlyn was because she interrupted McMahon backstage, and Steph thought this was disrespectful. She not only had Kaitlyn lose her Championship, but she then insulted her on national TV before the former Divas Champion asked for her release.

AJ Lee tweeted Stephanie about the fact that she had done nothing to push equal pay in WWE, which is something she should have used her position for, but the boss' daughter never replied. However, AJ was gone from the company not long afterward. It's not wise to cross the boss' daughter.

Men: WWE Stars Are Not Allowed To Show Any Cuts

There was once a time when the WWE was well-known for their Hardcore, TLC and First Blood matches but as the company has evolved out of the Attitude Era and into the current PG/Reality Era, the WWE stars are no longer allowed to bleed.

Wrestlers are also banned from blading as well. Many stars used to do this as a way to make their match look much more brutal than usual, but the company no longer wants to be related to this kind of thing. There were reports a few years ago that stated that WWE was now fining their talent if they broke these rules on national TV. There was also a leaked document that confirmed this, according to Bleacher Report.

Women: The Women Of WWE Have A Strict Dress Code

It is unknown if there is a dress code that is forced on the male members of the WWE roster, but it is known that the women of WWE are forced to wear a dress and heels when they are traveling to arenas. The women often have to drive in these shoes, but it means that they are always looking their best when they arrive at the show.

There are a handful of stars, like Mick Foley, who wouldn't have to adhere to a dress code since he was a character who could dress however he wanted, but there are no exceptions for the women. WWE likes all of their employees to always look presentable at all times, so this rule doesn't seem as though it is a hard one to follow since the company is only ensuring that their stars always look good because paparazzi are around every corner.

Men: WWE Stars Need Permission To Undergo Medical Procedures

WWE pays for the surgery of their superstars if they have injuries in the ring that are affecting their ability to perform, which is why there are so many WWE doctors who need to approve surgery before a superstar is allowed to have it done. This rule came to light a few years ago when Paige's own personal doctor told her that she required neck surgery, but WWE refused to approve the procedure since their doctors didn't think it was needed.

Paige was already suspended from the company at the time and she decided to go ahead with the surgery without WWE's permission. This surgery left her on the sidelines for almost a year before she returned to the company back in November and it seemed to have helped her enormously. Paige has since been sidelined with another neck injury, which could have already ended her career.

Women: Women Are Required To Take Part In Photoshoots

Women in WWE over the past few decades have become well-known for their alluring online photoshoots, but these could hopefully be a thing of the past.

With the era of "Divas" coming to an end and the Women's Revolution in full swing, the women of WWE may not be required to be part of as many photoshoots as before, according to WWE.com.

Of course, the women are still part of holiday shoots which they are once again forced to show off the physical attributes which made them some of the best-known athletes in the world, but these aren't as bad as the images that the women were part of when the Diva Search was still an annual event. Times are changing for the women, but this change is coming much slower than many of the women expected but hopefully it will come in due course.

Men: Stars Aren't Allowed To Keep Their Indie Names

This is something that WWE makes the decision on. There are a number of stars in WWE right now, like Bobby Roode, AJ Styles and Shinsuke Nakamura, who are allowed to keep the names that they wrestled under when they came to WWE, while many others were forced to change them.

The biggest one recently was when Rockstar Spud came over to WWE after a lengthy career in TNA and the company renamed him Drake Maverick. He was unable to keep the name that he has become best known as, which could be so that WWE can claim copyright over this new name and then stop him from being able to cash in on it if he leaves.

It is a tactic that WWE has used ever since CM Punk walked away from the company and retained the rights to his ring name, which he now uses in UFC.

Women: Women Need To Ask Permission To Have Tattoos

This rule goes without saying, WWE owns the image rights to all of their superstars which means that they have to as permission if they want to change their hair or get something much more permanent, like a tattoo.

Paige was once again the reason why this rule was brought to light a few months ago when she showed off new hand tattoos that could have caused her a number of issues.

WWE has found a way for Paige to cover up these tattoos, which contain less than PG language, so that she can still perform on WWE TV, but it is likely that the company was less than happy with the star. She obviously decided to get the tattoo done without her employer's permission. Paige isn't the only star who has had an issue with this in the past.  Former United Kingdom Champion Tyler Bate also had a hand tattoo done without permission and that has left him in hot water with WWE officials.

Men: Talent Must Not Have Any Runs With The Law

As with many jobs, WWE doesn't like to have any bad press printed about them or their superstars, which means that there is a strict rule in place when it comes to any run-ins with the law. Former Diva Emma was released after she was arrested for stealing an iPad case before the company then rehired her after thinking about how harsh the punishment was, but not all stars were that lucky.

Rich Swann was recently released from WWE after he was arrested because of a domestic incident involving his wife. WWE operates a zero tolerance rule with their superstars when it comes to violent incidents and the company will always suspend the superstar while an investigation takes place. Swann opted to leave the company following his suspension rather than return to the spotlight, even though he isn't the first superstar to be suspended under this rule. Event legends like Jerry Lawler and Kevin Nash are also on the list.

Women: Becoming Pregnant Can Cause Problems For WWE Divas

Becoming pregnant in WWE has become quite a common thing in WWE right now, but it's worth noting that Brie Bella had already announced her retirement, while Maria and Maryse were not seen as active female wrestlers, just valets for their husbands. The women who are seen as wrestlers are not allowed to become pregnant while they are contracted to the company.

Dawn Marie is a great example of this, since the former star became pregnant while she was still contracted to WWE as an in-ring performer and the company told her that she could have maternity leave. Part way through this leave, she was released from the company and then went on to sue for wrongful termination, according to Wrestling Inc.

The company is happy to promote couples on their roster when it's for Total Divas, but not happy with women needing time away to start a family.

Men: No One Is Allowed To Sneeze In Front Of Vince McMahon

This might not be one of the best rules when it comes to the WWE, but it seems that no one is allowed to sneeze in the presence of Vince McMahon. He is someone who has never seen illness as a reason to not do his job and he avoids illness at every turn as well. Germs are spread when people sneeze so the chairman has ensured that he isn't struck down by these germs by banning stars from sneezing in his presence.

Vince is the most powerful person in the WWE locker room and he's been that way for a long time. He's a smart man, which means that he's obviously onto something here because he's never had to take time away from the company through illness, so he should probably share more of his secrets so that the rest of the world is able to avoid illness as well.

Women: Must Not Post Anything Online Without Approval

This is a huge thing for WWE, since the company has begun using social media as a tool to promote their shows, which could be why there is a rule about what stars can post online. In recent years there have been a number of WWE releases because of online statements, the most famous one was NXT star Zahra Schrieber, who was released from the company after fans found a number of Instagram posts where she was seen promoting questionable things, according to Wrestling Inc.

The company was not too happy about this since they knew it would lead to some bad press for them, so they decided the best option was to release her from her contract. At that point, she had already made headlines for her part in the scandal that surrounded Seth Rollins, so WWE decided that their best option was to release her rather than gamble on her not being in any trouble in the future.
